Update on practice facility (tee surface)

We are moving forward on making improvements to the turf with the following cultural practices.  We will be carrying out these procedures on maintenance Mondays.  This process began over a week ago by verticutting the tee deck, and we will continue this procedure through the golf season.  Starting in July, aerification, top dressing and overseeding will take place.  Divot mix will be applied to areas that are showing wear.  Fertilizer will be applied as needed based on growth and weather conditions.  Improvements may not be noticed immediately but with a focus on these practices, we will see better quality turf in the near future.

Gypsy Moths

Many of you have noticed we have been hit with a large infestation of the Gypsy Moth (currently in their caterpillar form).  The damage caused by these moths occur during their caterpillar stage, which is now coming to a completion.  They generally feed on the foliage of White Oaks but have also been known (when the population is high) to feed on any deciduous trees and surprisingly, even on some coniferous trees such as Spruce.  Chemical applications at this stage in their life cycle will do little if any to control the population.  As such, an aerial spray will be applied in early spring of 2019.

2018 Lookout Point Men's Invitational

Congratulations to Garrett Atkinson - The Winner of the Lookout Point Men's Invitational.  Garrett made 5 birdies en route to a round of 74, capping it off with an excellent 2 putt from a slippery location on the 18th green to clinch the T.H. Brooke Trophy for the 2nd consecutive year in front of a large crowd of onlookers.  Great playing Garrett! We look forward to seeing you in 2019 at the 60th Annual Men's Invitational to see if you can become the 2nd person in history to successfully complete a Three-peat!!!

Congratulations also to Lookout Point member Brett Richardson who won the A.T. Gaylor Award for Low Net with an excellent round of 75 (Net 69).  Did you know? Brett is quickly becoming a name to watch at Lookout Point.  In 2016 he won the A Flight of our Club Championships, and last year, with his partner Rob Boardman, he won the 2017 Member/Guest.  The A.T. Gaylor Award is a great way to start the 2018 season!  Great shooting Brett!

Canada Golf Day

[On May 3rd,] Canada’s national golf industry associations announced the first annual National Golf DayMay 29, an event aimed at raising awareness to the public and government decision makers on the many positive impacts of the golf industry.

“More Canadians play golf than any other participation sport and our industry is #1 in driving economic impact, employment and charity fundraising,” said Jeff Calderwood, National Allied Golf Associations (NAGA) and We Are Golf Chair. “Combined with golf’s diversity, healthy fitness benefits and environmental stewardship, we really do have such a positive message to communicate.”

National Golf Day provides the opportunity for Canada’s golf industry leaders to discuss these wide-reaching benefits of the sport directly with MPs, Senators and policy advisors at Parliament Hill. A May 28 evening reception will also be held in Centre Block, and NAGA will be hosting a day of interactive golf activities on the front lawn where MPs and visitors will be able to participate. This day of outdoor golf activities will include a focus on junior golf.

“We are really looking forward to our time in Ottawa and expect that government officials from all parties will be impressed to learn about all the ways golf contributes in virtually every riding throughout Canada,” added Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum. “There are so many meaningful benefits that golf delivers in communities from coast to coast and it will be great to share all those insights on National Golf Day.”

Golf courses and all related stakeholders throughout Canada are encouraged to promote the same positive messages. NAGA will provide shareable social content.

NAGA is also announcing a rebranding of its public facing name to We Are Golf. This aligns with the same brand name used by the American golf industry for allied association activities such as National Golf Day. NAGA does carry on as the administrative body but will use the We Are Golf brand for all public communications.

We Are Golf is a public awareness raising initiative sponsored by the National Allied Golf Associations, which includes the following members: Golf Canada, Canadian Golf Superintendents Association, Professional Golfers’ Association of Canada, Canadian Society of Club Managers and the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada. For more information on We Are Golf, visit www.wearegolf.ca
