NEWS FROM THE GOLF COURSE

Next week we will begin aerifying our tee decks. For those unfamiliar with aerification, there is a quick 30 second video below. Aerifying our tee decks improves the overall health of the surface and root system. There will be no impact to daily play - our grounds crew will clear cores to clearly identify teeing areas until we can complete the process with seed, sand and fertilizer being fully applied. Over on the practice range, you have likely noticed the strip of bare ground in front of the Academy side of the tee deck. We will be applying a spray to take care of the weeds and then using the cores pulled from our tee deck aerification process as part of our fill in and sodding procedures.

On the golf course, you will also notice that we have edged and cleaned the majority of our bunkers in preparation for additional bunker sand which will be added and topped up where needed over the next few weeks.

This week’s “photo(s) of the week” comes to us from Phil Goodwin & Carolyn Culliton. This “guy” can be found wandering the 17th fairway, going back and forth between the pond on 12 and pond behind the 16th green. Let’s have some fun, Mr. Turtle needs a name. Comment at the bottom of today’s blog and the best name will win a sleeve of Pro V1 golf balls. So far, my daughter Peyton is in the lead with “Rocky The Turtle”….because he looks like a rock :)

HOLE IN ONE(S)

2 weeks “re-opened” and 2 hole in ones! Both on Thursdays. Congratulations to Chris Singleton & Matt Bosela who both made their first hole-in-ones at Lookout Point Country Club. This was Matt’s 2nd of his career, and Chris’ 1st. Both gentlemen didn’t see the ball go in the hole - if you see Chris, you will have to ask why….it’s a pretty good story.

LIGHTNING POLICY

This week we are starting to see some Thunderstorm’s in the forecast. Now is the perfect time to remind everyone of our Lightning policy.

Lookout Point monitors the weather with an online radar. If lightning is in the area, a horn will be blown by the Golf Shop and Halfway House Team Members. All play shall cease in the event of lightning. It is each member’s and guest’s responsibility to be aware of lightning and seek shelter immediately upon hearing the sound of the horn.

Put safety first! As soon as you hear thunder:

Seek: lowest elevation, large buildings, fully enclosed vehicles.

Avoid: trees, open areas, elevated areas, metal objects (golf cart, fences, maintenance equipment, power lines).

GOLF COURSE NEWS - June 8th

June 08, 2021

Message From the Professional Staff,

Good Afternoon,

We’ve got a bunch of news to share, so I’m going to keep our introduction short and simple with a couple reminders.

We were thrilled to hear that Ontario would move into Stage 1 earlier than expected - this Friday, June 11th.  What does that mean for Golf Courses:

Patio Dining – 4 people to a table maximum

Pro Shops – can open up to 15% of capacity

Lessons - outdoor fitness classes, outdoor sports training (no games or practices) and outdoor personal training, with 10 patrons maximum and 3 metres physical distancing

All the other regulations remain in place, including our Mask policy when inside any building and when sharing a cart with an individual who is not from your same household.

Don’t forget to help us say a proper farewell to Dan Greenwood - click on the button below and follow the very simple steps to record and upload a 15-30 second message.

RECORD FAREWELL VIDEO

We’ve got fitting day news, guest access update, divot repair tutorials, a father’s day gift guide, re-opening of club storage and cleaning and our rain/lighning policy all down below!  Pour a drink and settle it….this newsletter is a bit longer than most…

This week’s “photo of the week” comes from LPCC member Diane Girard.  We’ve seen birdies on 13, a rare eagle or two…..but a goose in a tree?

CLUB STORAGE & CLEANING SERVICES

Starting on Saturday, June 12th we will be re-opening club storage, caddy/battery storage and club cleaning services. The outside guest services team will be setting up bag slots and getting things such as tags ready for our new members over the coming days. Storage spots used in the past, may have changed or been modified. Club Storage is included for specific categories of membership and is based upon availability.

If you would prefer to have our staff not clean your clubs, you are more than welcome to still store them and let us know that cleaning is not required.

For more information and/or any questions please contact the Golf Shop.

DIVOT REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

Keen eyes would have started to see divot mix & our divot bottles starting to appear on the carts and by the water station at #1. There was a bit of a delay in getting our divot mix - but now that we have it, we want to remind everyone on proper divot repair and replacement procedures.

How to Replace a Divot

If the divot is intact and there is soil still attached, simply replace it in the correct orientation and firmly press the divot into the ground with your foot. Pressing down is important because this establishes good contact between turf roots and the soil, which helps the divot heal. Pressing down also creates a firm, smooth surface that provides better playability if someone's ball ends up on the divot while it is healing. If there are any significant gaps between the divot and the surrounding turf, fill them with divot mix and smooth it with your foot. This will help the turf knit back together.

How to Fill a Divot

If a divot does not have any soil attached, or if it has shattered into small pieces, it cannot be replaced and expected to heal properly. Filling the divot with divot mix is the best option in these situations. Depending on the course and the grass types, divot mix may be pure sand or it may contain seed to aid in recovery (ours contains seed) Regardless of what's in the mix, the way to properly fill a divot is the same: Add mix until it is slightly below the height of the adjacent turf, then smooth the mix and press down with your foot. It is worth taking a few extra seconds to get the level just right. Too little mix will create poor playability and may not allow the divot to heal fully. Too much mix creates playability issues and can damage mowing equipment.

GUEST ACCESS UPDATE

We have had a number of questions over the past few days about our current guest policy and with the patio opening this weekend and the current excellent conditions of the golf course, we know the desire to bring your guests is as high as ever.

We are still conscious of the demand on the daily tee sheet, and in our daily lotteries there are still days of the week (Thursday, Saturday & Sunday) where not all members are receiving tee times.

Some of the information we look at when trying to balance member demand and guest play include peak times and peak and off peak days. We have been open for a little over 2 weeks now and have seen the following trends:

On weekday mornings, we have capacity for 128 playing spots. Looking at the data from our first 2 weeks open (removing a couple of poor weather days) we are averaging 114 spots booked during the mornings.

In the 17 days (including today) that we have been open we are averaging over 210 rounds per day (approx 3600 rounds). That puts us on pace for over 34,000 rounds by the end of October (not including the time we were open in early April). We understand that guest access is a huge perk of membership at a top 100 golf course such as Lookout Point, and we want to see all our members showing off the golf course to friends and family and enjoying the view on the patio with your guests, we just want to make sure that it is not at the detriment of tee time availability for our membership as a whole.

We are still very early into our 2021 season. We expect demand on the tee sheet to drop as the province reopens, workplaces reopen, travel begins and other forms of activities are permitted. Today, an increase in guest play - as little as 10%, would mean that at key times in the day our members would be unable to secure tee times. We will continue to monitor the lottery results, and off-peak days and we expect in the coming weeks we will be able to offer expanded guest access.

In the meantime, the current guest access is 3 days in advance (to allow all categories of membership access to the tee sheet) and on the following days:

Weekends & Holidays
Guest bookings welcome after 2:00pm

Weekdays
1 Guest per member prior to 12:00 pm
Up to 3 guest maximum per member after 12:00pm

A reminder that guests are not able to be booked online. For contact tracing purposes all guest bookings must be made through the Golf Shop.

GOLF COURSE NEWS - June 4th

June 04, 2021

Message From the Professional Staff,

Good Afternoon,

Yesterday, along with all of you, we celebrated our 99th anniversary and in looking back to the past, we also are looking ahead to the future and excited with what our 100th year will bring. Today, we are reflecting on the past 7 years as Dan Greenwood (General Manager) ends his tenure here at Lookout Point Country Club. While Covid-19 has made gathering for celebrations and farewells a recent memory, we weren’t going to let Dan get off the hook without wishing him a proper farewell.

You're invited to submit a video message and join in on the fun of making a personalized Farewell video for Dan. It's quick and easy. It's your contribution that will help to make this unforgettable. Thank you!

Submit your message before Mon, Jun 7, 2021 11:59 PM EDT by clicking on the button below:

In today’s newsletter we also want to inform you of the upcoming fitting days with Callaway, Cobra, Titleist & Taylormade.

If you have some great photo’s of the course or content you would like to see featured in our weekly newsletters, please feel free to send it in. This week, we have a fantastic photo courtesy of Peter Scott. The St. Andrews Cross over the 10th hole - maybe it’ll give up a few more birdies this week…

GOLF COURSE NEWS - May 26th

May 26, 2021

Message From the Professional Staff,

Good Afternoon,

A quick turnaround from yesterday’s newsletter, but we have so much to share that we don’t want to put it all in one place and have you miss it! Today we have a topic that is near and dear to all of our hearts - the golf course. We are excited to welcome “The Preferred Lie” to the course next week, announce the winners from our recent PGA Championship Pool and an update from Aldo in the “Greens Report”.

Dan Roud
PGA of Canada
Lookout Point Country Club

THE PREFERRED LIE

On Wednesday, June 2nd you may want to keep an eye to the sky as the air above Lookout Point will have a number of drone’s capturing the beauty that is our golf course. We are thrilled to team up with “The Preferred Lie” who will be creating a video for us complete with on course photography, drone footage, playing footage, interviews with staff and members and much more as we begin to ramp up celebrations for our 100th anniversary in 2022. Lookout Point will be featured on their “Yours to Discover” video series in March of next year. For an idea of what to expect, you can watch the below episode from “Pender Harbour” in BC. In addition to the course footage, the TPL team and a group of panelists will be on the the course and will be rating the course for inclusion on their website (link on the button below). Unique to their rating system is the ability for players to sort and filter their rankings, meaning an individual who wants to know the best golf courses ranked by access, country/continent, green fee rates, architect, age and/or yardage can do so.

Courses in Canada that TPL have worked with include Toronto Hunt, Cataraqui, St. Thomas, Royal Montreal, Capilano, The Pulpit Club and many more.

If you see them here next Wednesday, June 2nd, please help us in giving them a proper Lookout Point welcome.

THE PREFERRED LIE WEBSITE

THE GREENS REPORT

Welcome back - for the second time this year. It’s been great to see everyone out enjoying the golf course. Here is some information you should be aware of:

GREEN SPEEDS
We are getting a little too used to last minute provincial announcements. With only 2 days notice to open our course, we know that our green speeds are not typical for this time of year.

Why is that?
During the shutdown we were mowing our greens at a higher height and on a less regular basis to maintain their overall health. Now that we are open, we can begin to lower the height of cut, but we need to do so SLOWLY, and on a daily basis to properly bring the speeds back while ensuring the grass stays healthy.

ROUGH HEIGHT
To say our rough is healthy may be a slight understatement. That said, healthy rough at the beginning of June is not new to us. Late May is the time when our grass goes to seed, causing additional thickness and added length. In a normal year, it is always a focus to try and keep up with what mother nature has provided. We now have two mowers out daily helping us catch up and bring the rough under control. Within a week we should be back to our normal rough conditions

LANDSCAPING
Recently we have completed landscaping around the clubhouse as part of our beautification plans as many of the old plants needed some updating. We are also adding new flower beds with new hole-in-one posts at our par 3 tee sites. We will start this project very shortly.

As many will notice where we laid new sod where trees used to be as part of our tree removal process. These areas are easily noticed due to it’s darker colour. These areas need to be left undisturbed over the next few weeks as they take root. With that said, these areas have been outlined with “green stakes”. Please treat these areas as GROUND UNDER REPAIR the same as you would were they painted or had white stakes. Do NOT drive your golf carts over these areas, do not play from these areas - please take the point of closest relief no nearer the hole and play from there.

The final extension on the 13th hole has been asphalted and is now ready for carts. We still have some work to complete, primarily adding sod to the sides of the path.

WEATHER
Finally, it is important to note that the weather we are experiencing right now is very unseasonable. During the month of May we have received only 10% of normal rain we would have during a typical spring. Add to that the humidity has been extremely low, and you will see some drier areas throughout the golf course. We have been pumping record amounts of water for weeks already and will continue to do so until mother nature starts to help us out.

Please feel free tor reach out if you have any questions or concerns about the golf course,

Aldo Bortolon,

Superintendent
Lookout Point Country Club

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP POOL WINNERS

Congrats to Dan Girard (Dano1) who won this year’s LPCC PGA Championship Pool. With a team of Phil Mickelson, Shane Lowry, Will Zalatoris & Patrick Reed - Dan finished at 9 under par and a 1 shot victory over our 2nd place finisher, Dianne Haist (Attempting a win). Rounding out our top 3 was the team of “Who’s the greatest” (Gino Paolone) with a team score of 4 under par.

Congrats to our winners!!!

GOLF SHOP NEWS - May 25th

May 25, 2021

Message From the Professional Staff,

Good Afternoon,

With a busy weekend behind us (650 rounds played Saturday - Monday) we are now setting our sights on the coming weeks and getting our plans in place for a return to some normalcy. We anticipate being able to provide a full member events calendar and will look forward to a communication from our 2021 Games Committee in early June outlining this season plans. Today’s message is a short one as there is a lot of great info below that we want to focus on. That said, one quick reminder for today - please ensure you are replacing divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. If you don’t have a divot too, we have them available in the shop for a low member price of $7.00 plus HST. If you don’t wish to buy one, a golf tee works as a great alternative. There is really no excuse for not fixing a ball mark this early in the season. Let’s do our part to help keep our greens in great shape.

For those interested in new clubs in 2021, you will want to read on to the bottom of this newsletter as we are opening up appointments for fitting days with Cobra (THIS FRIDAY, May 28th), Titleist (THIS SATURDAY, May 29th) and Taylormade (Saturday, June 12th).

If you are 55 years of age or older (as of June 2021) and are looking for an opportunity to compete in an elite senior competition, we want you to consider joining our 2021 Senior Ryder Cup team. The Senior Ryder Cup was created in 1999 to provide a forum for senior male golfers who enjoy competitive team match play. Since its inception the SRC has grown from 4 clubs in 1999 to at present - 167. It is a non-profit organization and is mentored by a Board of volunteers whose Mission statement is: Provide and maintain an energetic and competitive match play format for senior male golfers and promote camaraderie and professionalism in senior golf activities in Ontario and surrounding areas.

The Lookout Point Team will be competing this year in the Barry Patterson Division with match dates scheduled for Willodel Golf Club of Niagara (June 22nd), Greystone Golf Club (June 29th), Lookout Point Country Club (July 6th) & King’s Forest Golf Club (July 12th). If you are interested in more information including the qualification process, please email team captain Doug Piett directly at doug7722@hotmail.com.

FITTING DAYS

We know many members have been anxious to try the newest clubs from our partners and vendors. We scrambled a bit when we got the news we could re-open and have been able to book a number of fitting days upcoming in June. We released our Callaway day (June 6th) in last week’s newsletter, which is now sold out. Don't wait to sign up for the next three dates below.

Note: These are not “demo” days. These are fitting appointments for individuals who are ready to make a purchase but want to experience a custom fit in order to ensure that their clubs are designed especially for their swing and physical attributes.

GOLF SHOP NEWSLETTER

GOLF SHOP NEWS - May 21st

May 21, 2021

Message From the Professional Staff,

I’m not sure that it’s a good thing that we are getting so familiar with closing and re-opening the golf course at a moment’s notice :) With that said, we couldn’t be happier to welcome you all back to the club again this Saturday, May 22nd. We are sure there are many questions, and we will do our best to answer everything we can over the next few days and weeks. We also want to avoid sending out massive amounts of information all at once to avoid the potential of missing key pieces that we need you to know. The key message is this - we will be proceeding ahead in the short term following the same protocols and procedures we did when we opened for play in April. You can find our previous newsletters in earlier blog posts as well as in your past emails. In preparation for Saturday’s opening there are a couple of things we need to share. If you have not done so, please ensure that you read Dan Greenwood’s Operational Update email which was sent out Thursday evening. In that email there is a Cart Policy waiver that ALL members must fill out prior to arriving at the first tee. If you are unable to fill it out online we will have paper copies available in the Golf Shop and with our Starter.

With regards to our tee sheet and the lottery. The next 6 days (Saturday, May 22nd to Friday, May 28th) will be drawn tonight and you will start to receive email notifications of your tee time(s). After we have had a chance to update our software overnight to reimplement our lottery windows we will begin to open up lottery bookings 10 days in advance. As was the case in April, we will have a daily lottery to start the season and the lottery will be drawn on the following days:

Mondays - for the following Saturday, Sunday & Monday
Wednesdays - for the following Tuesday & Wednesday
Friday - for the following Thursday & Friday

On behalf of the Professional Staff,

Dan Roud
PGA of Canada
Lookout Point Country Club

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE COMING TO THE CLUB?

For those members who were with us in 2020, our protocols will mirror how we started last season. With our Golf Shop closed for in person retail shopping and our Food & Beverage indoor & outdoor dining restricted, there really is no reason to be at the club for any amount of time before and/or after your round. Social gatherings are not permitted and the optics of groups of more than 4 individuals gathering before their tee times is something that we need to avoid at all times. The most notable addition to our 2020 protocols are the new masking in cart guidelines introduced by the province of Ontario (Click Here to Read)

WHAT IS OPEN?

The clubhouse is essentially closed until Step 1 of the new phased approached to re-opening is realized. Washrooms by the putting green will be available for members to use prior to their round. The 19th hole is open for take out & grab and go, and the Golf Shop is open for curbside pickup. Locker rooms and other amenities will remain closed until the government allows us to open them. In respect to Golf Retail, we are able to open at 15% capacity once stage/phase 1 begins. What that means for us right now is the Golf Shop is closed to individuals who are solely hoping to visit for shopping & browsing purposes. The Golf Shop will be open for individuals who have a tee time and are needing to pick up their last minute essential curbside items or pop in to sign a chit, pick up an online order or grab a take out item (drink & snacks).

RANGE BOOKINGS

In 2021, we will again begin the year with Practice Range bookings by appointment. Appointments can be booked up to 7 days in advance. If you are using the practice facility to “warm-up” prior to a booked tee time you DO NOT need to book a practice facility appointment. Spots will be reserved for individuals 20 mins prior to their tee time.

To start, we ask members to limit their practice appointments to once per day (maximum of 1 hour).

Range bookings are available under the Member Central section of the website under the heading “Practice Range Appointments”

Please note that with the holiday Monday, the practice facility will be closed at 5:00pm on Monday evening to facilitate a clean pick of the range. The practice facility will reopen on Tuesday, May 25th at 12:00 pm (noon).

ON COURSE NOTICE

There are two main topics that you should be aware of on the golf course. With the recent tree removal our grounds department have begun to repair those areas where trees were removed with fresh sod. The sod is easily noticed due to it’s darker colour. That said, these areas have also been outlined with “green stakes” (see images below). Please treat these areas as GROUND UNDER REPAIR the same as you would were they painted or have white stakes. Do NOT drive your golf carts over these areas - please take the point of closest relief no nearer the hole and play from there.

You will also notice that the cart path on #13 has been freshly resurfaced. The new section is closed until the surface has had a chance to cure.

GUEST ACCESS & GUEST PLAY

Good news! We will be allowing guests again as we reopen the golf course. That said, we want to ensure that every category of membership has access to booking a tee time based on their restrictions prior to opening the tee sheets for Guest play. The following rules will be in place to start the season:

  1. Guest booking are not allowed in the member lottery

  2. Guest bookings must be made at maximum 3 days in advance

  3. Guest bookings must be made over the phone (not online) so that we can gather contact information for covid-19 tracing purposes.

  4. One Guest per member is permitted Monday - Friday before noon. Up to 3 guests per member after noon on those days. On Weekends & Holiday, guests are permitted after 2:00 pm only.

We will continue to monitor how busy the tee sheet is and restrict or open guest access accordingly.
