Golf Course Update

As we enter the 4th week of an extended heat wave with next to zero rainfall, the golf course is certainly showing signs of stress.  The rough presently is in a semi-dormant state, especially in areas which receive no irrigation.  Our irrigation system, installed in 1987, is certainly showing signs of its weakness.  With the high heat and humidity were dealing with, disease pressure is at the highest its been in many years, and you can see some signs of this on a few greens.  We've implemented a plan to reduce any undue stress primarily to the putting surfaces.  Our greens are healthy, but this does not exclude them from any form of disease.  We have in the past few weeks, and will continue, to keep them as healthy as possible, keeping in mind golfing must go on.

The steps we have taken so far are:

* applied approximately 10% more water
*  Increased fertilizer
* Removed growth regulators
* Continued with our fungicide program
* Skipped mowing once a week
* Raised our mowing height
* Sliced the greens once (a form of venting)
* Eliminated any verticutting

Green speeds will be a bit slower, but having our greens make it through healthy is first and foremost.  Starting Sunday evening and finishing Monday morning, we will do another form of venting, using a 1/4-inch solid mini tine.  Immediately after, the greens will be rolled to smooth out the surface and, in a few days, there will be no signs of this procedure.  The value of getting oxygen down to the roots with this procedure is extremely valuable to the health of the turf moving forward into the remaining portion of the golf season.  If anyone has any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me at aldo@lopcc.com

Look what our Juniors are doing....

Lookout Point's junior members continue to shine Locally, Provincially and Internationally.  Here are some of the highlights of just the past couple of weeks:

In International competition:
Kayla Burke & Ben MacLean we're selected to represent Team Canada at Dolphin Head Golf Club in Hilton Head, SC in the 2018 North America Cup!  Ben won all 3 of his matches and Kayla won 2 out of 3 to lead Team Canada to a 13.5 to 10.5 win over Team USA.

Provincially:
Freddy D'Angelo (9th) & Luke Delgobbo (14th) both played exceptionally well in windy conditions at Loyalist Country Club in Bath, On. at the Ontario Junior's to qualify for the Canadian Junior Championship later this summer!

Over at Maple City Golf & Country Club, Kayla Burke finished T13 in the Ontario Juniors and as a result qualified for the Canadian Junior Girls Championship in BC!!

Freddy D'Angelo has been on fire this summer!  Earlier this summer Freddy managed to qualify at King's Forest for the Ontario Men's Amateur which was held this past week at St. Thomas Golf & Country Club.  Freddy finished tied for 10th which guarunteed him a spot in the Canadian Men's Amateur in BC later this summer.   If that wasn't enough, Freddy placed t11 at Blue Springs earlier this year in a Canadian Open Qualifier and now has an opporunity to qualify for the RBC Canadian Open through the final qualifing stage at Heron Point on Monday, July 23rd.

Not content with a North America Cup already to his credit, Ben Maclean won the Juvenile Boys (u17) qualifier at Blue Mountain Golf & Country Club this past week on July 12th.  What you may not know is Ben is actually still a Bantam (u15)!!!  Best of luck in Oshawa at the Ontario Juvenile Championships Ben!

On August 21-22nd, Sawmill Golf Club here in Fenwick, On. will be hosting the Ontario Bantam Championship.  In the field representing Lookout Point are Ben Maclean, Matthew Martell & Bradyn Wark (who qualified with a 13th place finish at Cambridge on July 8th).

Closer to home:
Here on the Niagara Junior Tour our juniors continue to lead the way.  Here are some of the results from the tour stops at Rockway and Rolling Meadows earlier this month

Rockway Vineyards
u13 Boys - Michael Martell (2nd Place)
u15 Boys - Braydn Wark (1st), Matthew Martell (2nd), Isaiah Ellis (4th)
u17 & u19 Boys - Matt Gibson (1st), Ethan Siebert (6th)
